George Michael débute sa carrière en 1982 aux côtés de Andrew Ridgeley dans le groupe Wham!; il y officiait déjà comme chanteur et compositeur.
En 1984, George Michael sort son premier titre solo "Careless Whisper" (qu'il écrit alors qu'il n'a que 17 ans) qui connait un énorme succès. En 1995, à la suite d'un sondage réalisé par une grande radio et un grand journal anglais, cette chanson sera élue "meilleure chanson de tous les temps".
George Michael participe au Live Aid de 1985 puis sort son premier album solo "Faith" en 1987 qui contient entre autres l'énorme hit I want your sex qui intègre la bande originale du film Le flic de Beverly Hills 2, mais le clip, jugé trop provoquant, est censuré par la critique britannique et interdit de diffusion sur la BBC. La même année, il est le premier chanteur blanc à chanter en duo avec Aretha Franklin. "I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)" est un gros succès.
Michael parvient à placer 6 singles à la première place des charts mondiaux et devient une immense star qui se permet de rafler les prix au nez de géants comme Michael Jackson ou Prince. 14 millions d'exemplaires sont écoulés. En 1990, George Michael veut casser son image de popstar et sort l'album "Listen Without Prejudice" qui contient le single "Freedom 90" qui est un appel à sa liberté d'artiste. L'album est un semi-échec et le chanteur entre en conflit avec Sony Music. Au début des années 1990, George Michael place plusieurs tubes au sommet des charts dont parmi les plus marquants l'excellent "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me" avec Elton John enregistré à Wembley et le très dance "Too Funky", deux titres dont tous les bénéfices sont reversés à la lutte contre le SIDA.
En 1993 sort l'album "Five Live" dans lequel l'artiste chante aux côtés de Queen et Lisa Stansfield.
Le procès qui s'ouvre ensuite avec Sony empêche toute nouvelle production pendant les trois années suivantes. En juillet 1995, à l'issue du procès, George Michael quitte Sony et rejoint deux maisons de disques : SKG pour les USA et Virgin pour le reste du monde.
Le véritable retour du chanteur a toutefois lieu en mai 1996 avec la sortie de l'album "Older" et les deux hits ravageurs "Jesus To A Child" et "Fastlove". Le chanteur a perdu son petit ami Anselmo et livre un album composé dans la douleur. Il sera récompensé du titre de "songwriter of the year" aux Brit Award et de l'Artiste Masculin de l'Année par MTV Europe.
Le chanteur prend également sous son aile des rescapés de "boy's band" tels que Robbie Williams (ex-Take That) ou Geri Halliwell (ex-Spice Girls). Sa mère Lesley décède quelques mois après un ultime concert donné à Londres pour l'émission MTV Unplugged.
En 1999, George sort l'album de reprises "Songs From The Last Century".
En juin 2000, il accepte d'enregistrer "If I told you that", un duo avec Whitney Houston, enterrant ainsi la hâche de guerre entre les deux artistes qui ne s'étaient jamais beaucoup appréciés.
En 2003, il sort deux singles fracassants : "Freeek!" et son clip osé critiquant la pornographie puis "Shoot The Dog" dont la vidéo est un dessin animé se moquant des relations Bush-Blair en pleine crise irakienne.
En mars 2004, George Michael annonce à la BBC qu’il souhaite se retirer du business de la musique et de ce fait allait publier sur internet gratuitement ses futures compositions.
Son dernier album, "Patience", devait être le dernier à sortir dans les bacs...
En 2005, George participe au Live 8.
George Michael reprend ensuite la route en 2006 avec sa tournée intitulée "25 Live", tournée unique, car cela fait déjà 15 ans que la star n'en avait plus donné. L'artiste sortira en novembre une compilation intitulée "Twenty five", comprenant deux ou trois disques et trois nouveaux morceaux : "An easier affair", "Hear the pain" en duo avec Paul McCartney et "This is not real love", en duo avec Mutya, membre du groupe Sugababes.
